Description of Services

Functions as the governing office for the community; oversees all community programs, services and facilities
Activities and services for community members also include but are not limited to the following:
  • Child and Family Services worker on-reserve provided through Tikinagan Child and Family Services in Sioux Lookout
  • Hospital services available at Meno Ya Win Health Centre in Sioux Lookout and in Red Lake
  • Ontario First Nation Policing arrangements through Big Trout Lake Police services, administered by Ontario Provincial Police (OPP); local phone: 807-537-2585, fax: 807-537-2556
  • Provides several locally-owned gas/grocery/clothing stores, a butcher shop, a bowling alley and a community indoor arena (includes fitness centre)
  • Offers the Big Trout Lake Hotel and Restaurant
  • Operates a Canada Post postal station and a Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce located in small business centre
  • Provides a band-run community radio station and cable television
  • Provides the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Band Community Hall
  • Offers 5 churches of various denominations
  • Maintains the Sandy Banks camping/recreation area about 10 miles from community
  • Serviced by Wasaya Airways flights through the Big Trout Lake Airport, located 1.1 km SW of community
  • Participates in the Junior Canadian Rangers Program for youth (12-18 years) which teaches various skills including but not limited to first aid, using rifles safely, hunting and fishing, Native customs and traditions, healthy living, staying in school and problematic alcohol and substance use awareness
  • Offers Chakabesh Youth Centre
  • Provides the Equay Wuk Women's Shelter
  • Provides health care and health programs at the Big Trout Lake Nursing Station
  • Administers education services and Aglace Chapman Education Centre under the Kitchenuhmaykoosib Education Authority
  • Provides housing and services for community elders at New Seniors Home Care Centre, Post Island and Old Senior Citizens Home Complex, Mainland Creek
