Eligibility / Target Population

People who have aphasia as a result of stroke or brain injury * people who have completed or nearly completed their inpatient or outpatient course of therapy with a speech-language pathologist * people with aphasia that is likely to remain the same or improve * people who are able to participate in groups and maintain attention for longer periods of time

Description of Services

Community outreach program that assists people with aphasia to engage and participate in conversation using supportive communication techniques * group sessions facilitated by speech-language pathologist, communicative disorders assistant and social worker * education and support for caregivers

A typical aphasia group session may include:

discussing current topics and expressing opinions
role-playing everyday communication scenarios to develop conversational skills of listening and reading comprehension
supporting one another to participate and gain confidence in communicating
